Barbara Ann (Mateja) Kmiec

Barbara Ann (Mateja) Kmiec, beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, and cherished friend, passed away peacefully on August 13, 2026, in Bellville, Texas. She was born on November 23, 1941, in Sealy, Texas, and her 84 years were a testament to a life lived with quiet strength, generosity, and heartfelt devotion to her family and community. 

Barbara was the daughter of Frank Mateja, Sr. and Martha Vavrecka Mateja, whose guidance and values she carried with her throughout her life. Growing up in San Felipe, Barbara developed the steadfast character and vibrant spirit that defined her, and she graduated from Sealy High School in 1960—a proud milestone that would be only the first of many accomplishments. 

In 1962, Barbara married August Kmiec in Frydek, Texas, marking the beginning of a loving partnership and the establishment of a family she cherished deeply. That same year, Barbara and her husband moved to Chappell Hill, where she became a valued member of the community. Her faith was central to her life, and she was a devoted member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church and the KJZT. 

Barbara’s warmth and hospitality were known to all who entered her home. She found immense joy in simple pleasures—crocheting intricate patterns, tending lovingly to her garden, reading, playing bingo, and spending cherished moments with her grandchildren. Barbara generously shared her talents with others, often delighting family and friends with her baking, especially her much-loved kolaches. She also took pride in her work selling Tupperware and Watkins products, forming lasting friendships along the way. 

Above all, Barbara’s greatest joy came from her family. She is survived by her sons Michael Kmiec, Ferrell Kmiec, Douglas Kmiec, Mark Kmiec, and Becky Kmiec; her granddaughters Lauren Kmiec, Kristy Crawford, Sarah Crawford, Marty Kmiec, and Ashley Hopewell; her great-grandchildren Landon Kmiec, Cameron Kmiec, Adalyn Kmiec, Nathen Kmiec, Eden Kmiec, and Asher Hopewell; her sisters Doris Starkey and Dee Heman; and numerous nieces, nephews, other family, and friends who will miss her dearly and remember her remarkable kindness, lively wit, and steady encouragement. 

Barbara is reunited in eternal peace with her father Frank Mateja; her mother Martha Mateja; her brothers Ed Mateja and Frank Mateja; and her brother-in-law Nick Herman. Their memories will live on in the hearts of those Barbara leaves behind. 

Barbara’s life was one of service, love, and enduring faith. The legacy she created continues in her children and grandchildren, in the gardens she nurtured, the recipes she perfected, and the lives she touched. She will be remembered with abiding affection and gratitude for the example she set and the love she so graciously gave.
