Bobby H. Nelson, 90, passed peacefully, surrounded by family, after a long and remarkable life defined by perseverance, ingenuity, generosity, and deep devotion to those he loved.
Born in Houston during the Great Depression, Bobby overcame significant hardship in childhood and carried those early experiences with him throughout his life. Raised primarily by his mother, Estelle Owens, whose strength and sacrifices shaped him profoundly, Bobby learned early the value of hard work, gratitude, resilience, and family. He often spoke fondly of summers spent with relatives in rural Louisiana, where he discovered the security and abundance that land, livestock, and family could provide. Those experiences sparked a lifelong love of ranching, tractors, cattle, and caring for the land.
Bobby began working at a young age, delivering newspapers as a child and holding multiple jobs before he was even a teenager. Though his early years were marked by scarcity, he never lost his appreciation for simple comforts and joys. Family members knew of his legendary sweet tooth, especially his love of cookies and Hershey’s chocolate. He affectionately maintained what the family jokingly called his “chocolate safe,” where sweets were stored right alongside important papers and valuables. He delighted in discovering unusual treats, imported chocolates, and oversized candy bars gifted by grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
A proud Old Ag and member of the Class of ’57. Bobby earned his bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from Texas A&M University and later received his MBA from the University of Houston. He served his country in the United States Army and was honorably discharged as a First Lieutenant in 1964.
Bobby built a distinguished career in engineering and offshore technology. He began his career at Cameron Iron Works, advancing from engineer to leadership positions, and later worked with Vetco Offshore Inc. during a transformative era in subsea drilling and offshore production technology. An inventor at heart, Bobby was named on multiple engineering patents related to offshore drilling systems and well technology, reflecting the practical intelligence, curiosity, and problem-solving abilities that defined both his professional and personal life.
Later in life, Bobby purchased and operated Vanco Products Co., Inc., a food distribution company specializing in garlic, peanuts, and spices. One of his greatest joys was working alongside his son Owen, both before and after Owen earned his own Mechanical Engineering degree from Texas A&M University. Their shared love of engineering, business, and problem-solving created a lifelong bond that brought Bobby immense pride.
Though successful in business, Bobby remained happiest outdoors caring for his property, tending cattle, making hay, operating tractors, and maintaining the land he worked so hard to own. Even in his nineties, he continued doing the work he loved. Just days before his final illness, at 90 years old, he spent the day mowing around his home and trimming fence lines on one of his beloved tractors — work that left him exhausted but deeply satisfied.
Bobby also cultivated a love of model trains later in life and built an extensive train room that became a favorite destination for family, especially his great-grandchildren. He enjoyed attending train shows and sharing his collection and enthusiasm with others, never losing the sense of wonder that remained with him throughout his life.
Above all else, Bobby loved his family. He took tremendous pride in the generations that followed him and in the opportunities education and hard work made possible for them. Those who knew him will remember his intelligence, quiet humor, generosity, determination, resilience, and the deep satisfaction he found in building a meaningful life for the people he loved. He is survived by his beloved wife, Mary Jane Nelson; his daughter, Nancy and her husband Anthony; his son, Owen and his wife Debby; his grandchildren, Daniel and his wife Rebecca, Elizabeth and her husband Spencer, Matthew and his wife Becca, Anthony and his wife Jade, and Jennette and her husband Cameron; seven cherished great grandchildren; and many beloved nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Carol Kelt Nelson; his mother, Estelle Owens; his stepfather, Mosley Owens; and his father, Alonzo Nelson.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial donations toward the planned Bobby H. Nelson Endowed Scholarship Fund at Texas A&M University. Additional details regarding the scholarship fund will be shared with family and friends as they become available. A Celebration of Life will be announced at a later date, when family and friends can gather to honor Bobby’s life, share memories, and celebrate the enduring legacy he leaves behind.
