Born April 14, 1937, in Bellville, Dorothy Abel, a cherished figure in her community and beloved matriarch of her family, passed away peacefully at her home in Bellville, Texas, on May 18, 2025.
She attended grade school at Boggy Branch in Frelsburg, TX, before moving on and graduating from Needville High School. She attended Concordia Lutheran College.
Dorothy’s unwavering commitment to her family was evident in her ability to make a house a home through her passion for baking, canning, gardening, and sewing. Together, she and her husband, Allan, shared a passion for dancing and were members of several dance clubs. If they weren’t working, they were dancing. After many years as a stay-at-home mom, Dorothy enjoyed a career with Fort Bend Telephone Co. until her retirement. At that point, she became Allan’s right-hand (wo)man at ranching and hay production. He purchased Dorothy her very own air-conditioned tractor, known by all as Dorothy’s Tractor.
She is survived by her loving children, Suzanne (Rob) Mullins of Boling, Glenn Meyer of Wallis, and Renee (Scott) McCrea of Argyle, along with a proud array of grandchildren: Justin (Katie) Meyer, Nicole (Corey) Hughes, Michael Mullins, Ashley Conti, Cody Meyer, Grant (Jordan) McCrea, Avery McCrea, Morgan Meyer, and Riley McCrea. She is also survived by 8 great-grandchildren, her brother, Kirby Schultz, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Dorothy was preceded in death by her devoted husband, Allan Abel, and her parents, Arno Sr. and Evelyn Schultz. She also grieved the loss of her son, Gary Meyer, and her brothers, Calvin Schultz and Arno Schultz, Jr. Each of these losses deeply affected her, yet she remained a strong pillar for her family and friends.
There are so many people to thank for helping the family and caring for their mom over the past 14 years. Sue Horn, Oak Haven in Industry, TX, especially caregivers Wendy, Holly, Michelle, Marcy, and Galaxy, who loved her like family. And in her final days, the wonderful staff at Brenham Hospital and Acara Hospice. These are but a few. Dorothy leaves behind a legacy of love and strength. She will be fondly remembered by all who had the pleasure of knowing her.
