Obituary

Hans Alfred (John) Roesel, 78, of Brookshire, TX passed on to be with the Lord on December 3, 2025. John was born on June 2, 1947, in Hamaln, Germany, the youngest of three. He immigrated to the United States with his family as a child, on the sponsorship of members of the Lutheran Church. He held a deep appreciation and affection for the Lutherans because of this gift to him and his family. It was in the U.S. that he gained the nickname “John.”

Upon graduating from High School, John went into the military, and at the end of his time in the service, moved to Arkansas to work for Toshiba. In 1979, John followed one of his friends to Brookshire, TX to help open a Toshiba location there. He served there in many supervisory roles until his retirement in 2015.

It was while working at Toshiba that John met the love of his life, Phyllis Gail Ray. They bonded over a love of motorcycles. They decided to build a life together in 1993, purchasing land and building a home on acreage in Brookshire, TX. John enjoyed country life, mowing the yard, and spending time with beloved animals over the years: horses, cows, and several puppy dogs. Together, he and Gail created and found family in their neighbors, coworkers, and friends. John was a foodie and enjoyed cooking! He found joy in sharing a good meal and conversation with those he called family. He had a quick wit and loved to laugh with others. His smile, chuckle, and laughter invited everyone in to do the same.

John was a kind and generous man. Once he made a connection with someone, they became family. If he was aware of a need, he would fill it, with no expectation of praise or reward. He simply helped out of the kindness of his heart. John was a longtime member of Pattison United Methodist Church, and most recently served there by helping to maintain the property, mowing 2 acres multiple times every month. It was an expression of love for God, the church, and his church family. They are especially appreciative of his service.

John was a very creative person, and enjoyed making things come to life! In his quiet time, he built Lego sets, dollhouses, and models of various sorts. Some he kept, but many he gave away for others to enjoy. He also was an avid crocheter. Many loved ones were blessed to receive some of his handmade hats, gloves, and blankets. Earlier this year he added a new hobby: quilting.

John loved others well, and was well-loved. He is deeply missed.

John is survived by his love of 32 years, Gail Ray, and his faithful companion, Chico. He is also survived by his brother Harry (Nancy) Roesel and sister Ingra Roesel, all in Florida. Also surviving to continue his legacy of love and service are numerous nieces, nephews, and adopted family.

John was preceded in death by his parents.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held at a later date.
