John Arnold Sutherland September 8, 1946 – October 21, 2025
John Arnold Sutherland, 79, originally of Wilmington, Delaware and more recently residing in Katy, TX, passed away on October 21, 2025, surrounded by family.
Born on September 8, 1946, in Wilmington, Delaware, to George and Mary Sutherland, John grew up with a great love for sports. A graduate of Salesianum All-Boys High School, he was a natural athlete—playing football, baseball, and running track. Later, as an adult, he picked up golf and tennis, playing golf well enough to become a certified golf instructor.
John started his career with Woolworths, specializing in sporting goods and store openings. In the ’90s, he created Turin Golf, a golf-supply and manufacturing company that grew from his basement into an industrial-park operation serving local golfers and major retailers. After retiring from the sporting goods business, John kept busy working as a courier in Newark, Delaware.
John married his wife, Carol Sutherland, and together they raised their son, David. He also had two sons, John Jr. and Joe, from a previous marriage. He was a proud father who was always supportive and confident in their abilities.
He was rarely without music. He loved Elvis Presley and he loved to sing, and his family will always smile at how every song he sang—no matter what it started as—somehow turned into Elvis.
Always fixing things, he was a jack-of-all-trades around the house. A handyman, painter, and landscaper, he was always available to help when his family needed him.
When David was growing up, John enjoyed coaching his Midway Little League Baseball teams for a number of years. John also enjoyed watching Phillies and Eagles games with his son. He was fortunate enough to see the Eagles win the Super Bowl twice in the last seven years, and he and David were able to watch that second win together.
In recent years, John and Carol moved to Katy, Texas, to be closer to David and his family. He spent his final years surrounded by love and family.
He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Carol Sutherland; his sons John Jr. and wife Stacey of Orlando, Florida; Joe and wife Tiffany of Naples, Florida; and David and wife Christina of Fulshear, Texas; and seven grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, George and Mary Sutherland, and his sister, Georgeanne.
John will be remembered as a man who worked hard, took risks, and loved his family.
A Memorial Service will be held at Black Hawk Country Club in Richmond, Texas on Saturday, November 15th at noon. Family and friends are welcome to attend.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
