Karen Joy Martin Pennison, a talented professional artist and cherished member of her community, passed away on June 5, 2026, in College Station, Texas. Born on May 28, 1944, in Oil City, Pennsylvania, Karen led a life filled with creativity, dedication, and love.

Daughter of the late Gaylen "Abe" and Ruth Martin, Karen was raised with an appreciation for artistry and education. She completed her high school education and pursued some college studies, always nurturing her passion for art. Her artistic journey blossomed into a fulfilling career where she not only created stunning works but also generously shared her knowledge by teaching art classes for many years.

Karen's personal life was marked by a loving marriage to Richard Pennison, which began on October 31, 1963, in Houston. Though Richard preceded her in death, their union remains a foundation of cherished memories. Karen was also a devoted dog lover and found great joy in reading, interests that complemented her artistic spirit and brought her peace throughout her life.

She leaves behind a loving family who carry forward her legacy: her son Richard "Gus" (Terry) Pennison of Bellville; her daughter Penny Carpenter of College Station; granddaughters Morgan (Matthew) Thomas of Brenham, Cydney (Jason) Nations of Dallas, and Brianna Carpenter of Austin; and grandson Chase (Kiana) Carpenter of Austin. Karen was also predeceased by her brothers Barry Martin and Denny Martin.

Services to honor Karen’s life will begin with a visitation from 9:00 AM to 11:00 AM on June 12, 2026, at Schmidt Funeral Home in Bellville, Texas, located at 12029 Hwy 36 S, PO Box 610. Following the visitation, a graveside service will be held at 11:00 AM at the 1861 Pilgrims Rest Cemetery, 2565 Pilgrims Rest Road, Bellville.

Karen Joy Martin Pennison’s artistic legacy, her dedication to teaching, and her tender affection for family and friends have left an indelible mark on all who knew her. Her presence enriched countless lives, and she will be remembered with deep respect and affection.
