Lawanda Jean Helms Fults

Lawanda Jean (Grimes) Helms Fults, known to us as Jean, passed away on August 22, 2026, here in Sealy, surrounded by the family she loved more than anything in this world. Jean was born on May 18, 1947, in Houston, Texas, to Norris and Veda Bass Grimes.

She grew up and lived in Denver Harbor, Houston, and Sealy throughout different chapters of her life. Jean worked for many years as a manager at Walmart, but when you think about Jean and the life she lived, it wasn’t her work that defined her. It was her love for her family and her faith in the Lord.

Jean was a wife, a mother, a grandmother, a great-grandmother, a sister, and a friend. But those titles alone don’t fully describe what she meant to the people who loved her. Her family was at the very heart of her life. Her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren were some of her greatest blessings and her greatest joy. Jean loved her family deeply. She was the one who worried about everyone, wanted to know everyone was okay, celebrated the good times with them, prayed for them through the difficult ones, and loved them through every season of life. There wasn’t much she wouldn’t do for the people she loved. More than anything, she wanted her family to know they were loved and cared for. Those of us who knew Jean also knew how important her faith was to her. She was a member of Christian City Fellowship Church, and she loved the Lord. One of Jean’s greatest prayers was that the family she loved so dearly would always remain close and never allow anything to come between them. More than anything, she prayed that each of them

would come to know Jesus and hold onto their faith, so that the love that joined them here on earth would one day bring them all together again in Heaven.

On August 25, 2013, Jean married Gary Fults, who remained by her side as her beloved husband.

Jean is survived by her husband, Gary Fults of Sealy; her children, Darla Hofferek and her husband, Stephen, of Rosanky; Kimberly Wright of Fulshear; and Brian Helms and his wife, Emily, of Bellville. She also leaves behind her grandchildren, Holly Callie and her husband, Taylor; Dustin Potter and his wife, Jenna; Corey Brewer and his wife, Veronica; Hunter Macoy and his wife, Sarina; Sarah Helms; and Brily Helms; and her great-grandchildren, Drayke, Madilyn, Stori, Bryson, Ava, Tanner, Heidi, Lorelei, Allie, Robert, Seth, Trey, Radley, and Gatlin. She is also survived by her sister, Joyce Gray. Jean was preceded in death by her first husband, Charles Helms; her brothers, Edward Grimes, Jay Grimes, and Jimmy Ray Grimes; and her sister, Marie Westerman.

For those who loved Jean, it will be the little things that are remembered just as much as the big things—her voice, her laugh, the things she said, the way she worried about the people she loved, and simply the comfort of knowing she was there. Her absence leaves a space in this family that can never truly be filled. But Jean leaves behind something that will continue long after today: the love she poured into her family, the faith she carried, and the prayers she prayed over the people she loved. Jean’s life reminds us that our greatest legacy isn’t measured by what we leave behind, but by the lives we touch and how deeply we love. And there is no question that Jean’s family knew just how very much they were loved.
