Manuel Jesus Quintero Sr.

Today, we come together to honor and remember a man who meant so much to so many—Manuel J. Quintero.

Manuel was born on February 7, 1963, and throughout his life, he built something far more meaningful than anything material—he built a family, a legacy, and a life full of love, hard work, and unforgettable memories.

At the center of his world was his wife of 46 years, Sylvia. Their story began in Joliet, Illinois, where they met at a dance one November night. From that moment on, they were inseparable. Together they built a life rooted in love, raising their family and eventually making a new home in Houston, Texas in September of 1989. Sylvia wasn’t just his wife—she was his partner in everything. His shotgun rider, his best friend, his companion, his bride, and in his final days, his devoted caregiver. Their love is something we can all look up to.

Manuel was a proud father to Erika and Keith Rutledge, Emily Roberts, Estella Helbert, Eunice and Dustin Smith, and Manuel J. and Vianey Quintero Jr. He was also a loving grandfather to Katrina Alazai, Benjamin Jesus, Bella Juliet, Madalyn Elise, Quinten Kyle, and Sloan Iliana - each one a piece of his heart. His family was his greatest pride, and he showed that not just in words, but in how he lived every single day.

He was a hardworking man who dedicated much of his career to Igloo as a blow mold technician in the plastics industry. He took pride in providing for his family, and that work ethic never left him. Even beyond his career, he built something of his own with “359 Firewood,” showing his determination and drive.

But if you knew Manuel, you know he wasn’t all work—he knew how to enjoy life.

He was the grill master. BBQ wasn’t just cooking to him—it was his passion. Whether it was brisket, fajitas, or ribs, he brought people together around food, laughter, and love. Those moments—standing around the grill, sharing stories—those are the memories that will stay with us forever.

He loved the simple joys in life: fishing, going to the beach, spending days at the park, and being surrounded by family during holidays and birthdays. He loved football—especially his Dallas Cowboys. To him, they weren’t just a team, they were his team, and he wore that pride with every jersey in his collection.

Music was his love language. He didn’t just listen to music—he felt it. Whether it was singing karaoke, enjoying Mexican corridos like “Laurita Garza, Los Dos Amigos, & Las Tres Tumbas,” or playing his favorite country songs like “Tennessee Whiskey” or “Drinkin’ Problem,” music was how he expressed joy, connection, and emotion.

He also had a love for the open road—especially in his Chevy trucks. In his younger years, he worked as a mechanic, and that appreciation for cars stayed with him. Some of his happiest moments were the simplest ones—taking a drive with Sylvia, heading to a seafood or Mexican restaurant, sharing margaritas, laughing, and just being together.

Manuel lived a full life. A life of love, loyalty, and hard work. A life where family always came first. A life where he gave of himself fully—to his wife, his children, his grandchildren, and everyone lucky enough to know him.

He is now reunited with those who went before him—his father, Jesus Quintero Sr., his brother, Jesus Quintero Jr., and his nephews, “Kiddo” Jesus Wally Quintero and Jose Duenez Jr.

While our hearts are heavy, we can find comfort in knowing that his love doesn’t leave us. It lives on—in his family, in the stories we share, in the traditions we continue, and in the memories we hold close.

If there’s one thing Manuel showed us, it’s this:Love your family deeply. Work hard. Enjoy the moment. Turn up the music. And never miss a chance to gather around the people who matter most.

His faith was a quiet but steady foundation in his life. He often reminded his family to have faith in God’s plan and to trust in His timing. He encouraged those he loved not to worry about things outside of their control, but instead to hand their worries and cares over to God. He lived with a sense of peace that came from that trust, and he passed that wisdom on to all of us. We find comfort in knowing that he is in Heaven, because he put his faith in Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior.

As a reflection of that faith, we hold onto this scripture that he lived by:

“Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.”  Philippians 4:6–7

He will be deeply missed, forever loved, and never forgotten.
