Meredith Ann Kimsey Cockroft passed joyfully into the arms of her Savior Jesus Christ on November 13, 2025, in Katy, Texas. She was born on September 6, 1944, in New Orleans, Louisiana, to Ethel Meloche Kimsey and Clarence Scott Kimsey.
Meredith attended parochial schools in New Orleans and graduated from Louisiana State University New Orleans in 1966 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Elementary Education. She moved to Houston, Texas, in 1967 and began a 10-year teaching career in the Houston Independent School District at Ethel R. Coop Elementary School. In 1975 she was a finalist for HISD “Teacher of the Year.”
In 1972, Meredith married Kenneth Cockroft in Houston, Texas. She continued her teaching career until the birth of their first child, Martin. Meredith and Ken’s daughter Caroline followed fifteen months later, and Meredith made the decision to become a full-time mother and homemaker. The family moved to Katy in 1978, and after the children were raised relocated to Pattison, Texas. Meredith and Ken moved back to Katy in 2013. Her children, Martin and Caroline, and her grandchildren, Merry, Elspeth, Isabella, Lilia, Beatrix, and Jacob, were the absolute joys of her life. She, and they, flourished in the time they spent together.
A teacher at heart, Meredith was always on a quest to learn more. In 1981, she became a follower of Jesus Christ, and she devoted the rest of her life to studying the truth of Holy Scripture and sharing it with others. She created a website, https://thisgraceinwhichwestand.com/, where she shared her belief and her thoughts on living this life in preparation for eternity.
Meredith lived her faith in many ways. She sacrificed returning to her teaching career to take care of her mother and Ken’s father, both of whom lived with the family for many years. She gave much of her time to the churches she attended, whether through visiting the elderly or working as church administrator. Meredith was devout and questioning; fiercely intelligent, she researched everything for herself and never accepted easy answers. She loved to be right but loved the truth more, and throughout her life she changed her positions when she found evidence to the contrary. Meredith had least patience for the powerful who abused their position or profited from injustice, and she was ever loyal to and compassionate for “lost sheep.” She was a mentor to many and challenged all she met to live righteous, faithful lives. Meredith
loved puzzles and games and often laughed until she cried, especially at her husband’s humor. She was also a prolific writer who composed letters and poems, and who in 2023 completed the last draft of an eighty-thousand-word detective novel. She was a virtuous, accomplished woman.
Meredith is survived by her husband of fifty-three years, Kenneth Cockroft; her sister, Jane Hardesty, of Katy, and brother, Terry Kimsey, of Channelview, Texas; her son and daughter-in-law, Martin and Kimberly Cockroft, of Poulsbo, Washington; her daughter and son-in-law, Caroline and Ilich Guerra, of Katy; and her grandchildren Merry, Elspeth, and Beatrix Cockroft; and Isabella, Lilia, and Jacob Guerra.
A celebration of life will be held at First Baptist Church in Brookshire, Texas on Tuesday, December 30, at 2 pm. Meredith will be interred at Pattison Methodist Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, Meredith would be overjoyed if you donated to any organization that shares this truth concerning the LORD Jesus Christ, “Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under Heaven given to mankind by which we must be saved.” (Acts 4:12)
